The official PMI for September raises further questions about the durability of China’s economic rebound. The headline index only edged up when most had expected a bigger improvement. In addition, today’s figures reveal that, for the small and medium-sized firms that account for two thirds of manufacturing output, the last three or four months have brought no improvement in conditions at all.
