The recent improvement in business capital spending has prompted speculation that a business productivity renaissance is at hand. This seems like wishful thinking. The majority of the growth in recent business capital spending has been devoted to the oil and gas sector, which traditionally has done nothing for productivity growth. In addition, most of the rest of capital spending is just replacing worn out capital equipment. Accordingly, we are not holding our breath for any productivity revival.
