The 0.7% m/m decline in manufacturing sales in October was entirely due to a further decline in motor vehicle sales, which reflects the impact of the strike by GM workers south of the border. As a result, we anticipate a modest rebound in November when the strike ended, although the ongoing weakness in the global backdrop means that we shouldn’t expect too much from Canadian manufacturers in the coming months, particularly not when inventories remain elevated.
