The 2.4% m/m increase in mortgage applications for home purchase in November more than reversed the previous month’s drop. But the bigger picture is that home purchase demand has made no sustained upward progress since the start of 2016. And with inventory levels set to remain low, and interest rates set to rise, there seems little chance that mortgage applications will break out of that rut in 2018.
