The headline drop in housing starts in September was mainly driven by the volatile multifamily sector, but single-family starts also edged down. Looking forward, the good news is that lumber prices have now fallen back from their recent spike. The bad news is that labour shortages are getting worse and mortgage applications are soft, implying that starts will just tread water for the next few months.
