Existing home sales increased for the second consecutive month in August, to reach an 18-month high. But a number of factors argue against a sustained rise in activity. Demand for home purchase mortgages has seen only a minimal boost from lower interest rates, and home buying sentiment is subdued. With inventory close to record lows, we doubt sales will see much growth over the next year or so.
