The 0.4% m/m decline in industrial production in September was principally due to the GM strike, which dragged down autos production, and the unseasonably warm weather, which depressed utilities output. Nevertheless, aside from the expected bounce-back in autos output now that the strike appears to have ended, the weak survey evidence suggests that manufacturing output will continue to trend lower over the coming months.
