October’s personal spending and durable goods data reveal a fairly muted start to activity in the fourth quarter. Real consumption increased by a modest 0.1% m/m last month, while non-defence capital goods shipments (ex-aircraft), which is the main input into business investment in equipment, contracted by 0.4% m/m in October.
