Conf. Board Consumer Confidence (Oct.)

The sharp drop in the Conference Board's measure of consumer confidence to a six-month low of 71.2 in October, from 80.2, probably reflects the impact from the shutdown. (The survey period ended on the day the government reopened.) With Federal employees back at work, equity prices rallying and gasoline prices and mortgage rates falling, confidence is likely to rebound next month.
