We are confident that the housing market slowdown will bring the recent strong rates of household spending growth to an end. At the same time, we are optimistic that aggressive interest rate cuts will prevent the vicious cycle of falling house prices and rising unemployment seen in the early 1990s. But there is a risk that a significant deterioration in the labour market could tip the consumer sector into full-blown recession.
