The performance of the major precious metals diverged sharply in August, with gold and platinum outperforming their sister metals, silver and palladium. A further slump in Chinese equities and unexpectedly weak Chinese PMI numbers added to demand concerns for palladium (and to a certain extent silver), while an upswing in safe-haven demand drove the prices of gold and platinum higher.
