Chile’s economy slows sharply at end of 2013

Activity data released today suggest that Chile’s economy slowed sharply in the final months of last year. Growth in Q4 as a whole may have slipped to just 2.7% y/y – its slowest rate in almost four years. However, recent currency weakness, against a backdrop of a widening current account deficit and rising inflation, mean that there is little room for the authorities to loosen policy in order to support the flagging economy.
