Fragile recovery still needs more policy support

February’s household survey, released today, suggests that Japan’s consumers still lack confidence in the recovery, while the January data on core machinery orders do not yet justify hopes of a strong rebound in business investment. We continue to expect the Bank of Japan’s Policy Board to announce more support (in the form of an extension of one or two existing loan schemes with very favourable terms) at the conclusion of its two-day meeting tomorrow.
