December pick-up in activity is unlikely to last

Recent survey evidence, including today’s Economy Watchers’ Survey, has indicated a pick-up in activity in December. However, the evidence also suggests that this is unlikely to continue as firms expect business conditions to deteriorate again in the first quarter of this year, and respondents remain cautious particularly about the sustainability of recent improvements in employment conditions.
