How stretched are US stock market valuations?

The US Flow of Funds report published yesterday by the Federal Reserve suggests that the stock market remains significantly overvalued by historical standards. We doubt that equities are as far removed from their equilibrium value as they appear, but valuations are probably still stretched. While this does not preclude prices from rising further, it is another reason to be cautious about the outlook.
