Bank of Japan running out of room to surprise

On Friday the Bank of Japan is widely expected to announce another large increase in purchases of JGBs under its Asset Purchase Program (APP). Indeed, some commentators appear to believe that Japan’s economy could recover from deflation and grow strongly if only the Bank were willing to inflate its balance sheet even further, or at least that the yen would fall sharply. We think they’re wrong.
