Prospects for consumers remain reasonably bright

Weak US retail sales data for August, released earlier today, were the latest sign that the consumer recoveryin the developed world is losing pace. Even so, the prospects for household spending over the next fewyears are still fairly bright. This in turn should support growth in advanced economies of about 1.5% or so.
