Euro strength threatens recovery prospects

Euro-zone policymakers took another step along the path towards banking union last week, while the resolution of the US shutdown debacle appeared to remove an external threat to the region’s fragile economic recovery. But one legacy of the episode has been a further rise in the already strong euro against the US dollar. The currency’s strength is another reason to doubt that the economy can gain enough momentum to begin to address the region’s debt crisis.
