Oversupply weighs on property sector

The outlook for China’s property sector is increasingly gloomy. The usual rebound in sales after Chinese New Year has been feeble, and the glut of unsold properties on developers’ books continues to grow. New projects starts plunged in Q1, which may signal an important shift in sentiment among developers. With the sector’s fundamentals so weak, property construction looks set to be a drag on China’s growth through the rest of this year.
