The continued decline in housing starts from elevated levels supports our view that residential investment will remain a drag on economic growth over the first half of 2013. Unfortunately, housing starts are likely to drop even further in the second half of this year, as builders adjust to the rather sudden sales slump especially of condos. More generally, the downturn in home building will badly constrain economic growth both this year and next.
