Australia Retail Sales & Building Approvals (Feb.)

Although February’s building approvals data were broadly in line with expectations, retail sales were much weaker than expected and suggest that real consumption growth may have slowed notably in the first quarter of the year. This is unlikely to prompt the RBA to cut rates at tomorrow’s policy meeting, but it increases the chances that it will try to talk the dollar down as much more now relies on the performance of the external sector.
