Nigerian inflation figures released this week supported our view that border closures are pushing up prices in the country. We expect that this will prompt policymakers to delay interest rate cuts until late next year. Elsewhere, rumours of a big shakeup of Francophone Africa’s currency arrangements are probably premature. The franc-zone system may be unloved, but replacing it would be a complex political and legislative endeavour.
