Paul Dales, chief UK economist at the Capital Economics consultancy, said: “The more seasonable weather in April may support a rebound in sales this month. The larger-than-usual rises in the state pension, welfare payments and minimum wage in early April and the government’s next cost of living payment of £301 to welfare recipients [due to be paid between April 17 and May 7] will further support incomes.”
