Durable Goods (Jul.)

The big drop in headline durable goods orders in July is nothing to worry about, since it was entirely due to a drop back in orders in the volatile aircraft category. The more important news was that non-defence capital goods orders and shipments rose strongly. That suggests that, following an 8.2% annualised increase in the second quarter, business equipment investment is on track to post another big gain in the third quarter.
