The past month has brought some slightly better news about the world economy. In particular, there is further evidence that the pace of contraction in the euro-zone has slowed, relative to late last year, and that economic recovery has continued in Japan and the UK. Nonetheless, global activity remains fairly subdued and business surveys are still consistent with continued recession in the single currency area, where unemployment has risen further.
