Why did you apply to join the Capital Economics intern/student scheme?
I applied to join the Capital Economics intern scheme because I was keen to apply the macroeconomic theory that I had learned at university to affairs that were occurring in the real world. At university, you learn a lot of theory but they don’t teach you how to apply it or where it is applicable, however, following the internship and seeing the macroeconomy in action, I am a lot more comfortable with the theory, which will no doubt be helpful for my final year. I was also keen to work alongside and absorb knowledge from experts in the field and observe how they analyse various sources and arrive at conclusions on where the economy is headed.
What have you worked on while on the scheme?
Whilst on the scheme, I have primarily been working with the Climate Team and also spent a week with the Commodities Team. Something that I greatly enjoyed was the amount of responsibility that was entrusted to me, as well as the free reign that was given in terms of choosing the topics that I wanted to work on. While on the commodities team, I wrote an “Update” on the rice ban that happened in India. I am also currently working on an “Update” focussing on the impact that climate change is going to have on tourism, particularly in the EU. My overarching project throughout the internship has been to work towards a “Focus” on the “Role of Hydrogen in the Green Transition”. I have really enjoyed working on these pieces, firstly, because of how topical they are, but also because of how much of an impact they have on economies across the globe. I also spent a day shadowing the Consulting Team, gaining an insight into the differences between the teams, the work they do, and the way they operate.
What is the most rewarding or surprising aspect of your role at Capital Economics?
The most rewarding part of being an intern here at Capital Economics is getting your name on publications that get sent out to clients. It is great to see the work that you have produced making an impact for the clients and helping them make informed decisions. This is only possible because of the level of responsibility that you are given even as an intern and that is something in particular that I found quite refreshing. Furthermore, everyone in the office has been exceedingly friendly and welcoming, this helped me to settle in quickly, and there were various socials happening every week, so you felt like you were a part of the company.
