Why did you apply to join the Capital Economics intern/student scheme?
I wanted to get a taste for macroeconomic research in practice. There are few opportunities to directly apply an economics degree as a student, let alone at a firm which produces independent research, so this scheme felt like a great opportunity to do so!
What have you worked on while on the scheme?
I was placed on the Europe team for the scheme. My main piece of work was an assessment of the potential impact tariffs proposed by Trump could have on the euro-zone, explored through several different channels, though I also contributed to data forecasts produced by the team on a weekly basis.
What is the most rewarding or surprising aspect of your role at Capital Economics?
My contribution to written pieces has been the most rewarding aspect. I have helped write numerous data previews, wrote an update on the impact of Trump’s proposed tariffs, and contributed to a longer focus piece which will be released soon – far more than I had expected in my relatively short time here!
