Siemens

Economic impact case study

Capital Economics was commissioned by Siemens to estimate and report upon the contribution of the company to the UK economy.

Client profile

Siemens is the largest industrial manufacturing company in Europe and operates in more than 190 countries worldwide.

Project scope

Capital Economics was commissioned by Siemens to estimate and report upon the contribution of the company to the UK economy. They needed credible estimates of their impact to use with policy makers and the media.

Our research

We used a combination of official statistics and internal client data to generate estimates of the jobs, economic output and tax revenues supported by their operations. The project involved close collaboration with the client to help them provide the data required as inputs for the analysis. Using the data collected, we modelled the impact of the company’s activities based on the Office for National Statistics’ input-output tables, which set out the linkages between sectors of the economy. In addition to the aggregate numbers, we presented several case studies that demonstrated the productivity benefits of their products and activities.

Client deliverables

The client received a set of robust and defendable key statistics about the company’s contribution to the economy. These included quantitative estimates of the jobs, economic output and tax revenues supported broken down by local authority area and sector. The findings were written up in a clear and concise report with tables and graphics, as well as key factsheets which summarised the most important statistics in one page.

Client results

The client was provided with independent quantitative material that could be used by them in discussions with policy makers. The statistics were also used in material for public relations work in national and local media.
