Opening up, shutting down, infection data doubts

China has been relaxing some of its last controls on domestic movement this week while also pulling down the shutters on arrivals from abroad. That highlights how the epicentre of the coronavirus crisis has shifted away from China. But the global spread will of course make economic recovery in China all the harder. Meanwhile, questions are being raised about whether we should trust China’s infection data, which show only a handful of new domestic cases this week.
